mass trance

tom, i would love to read your book. its really hard to put into words such ineffable states. language can only communicate so much about such states and that is why it may seem that they aren't really saying anything about it. kinda sounds like they are talking about an experience and that to fully understand, you must BUY THE BOOK! :) but, what she is doing to having these online classes to "raise the collective conciousness (unconcious)" to a new higher level of mind. some say you dont even need the book, just tune into the classes. but ive heard crazy things about this book. every one i have talked to tell me that their lives have shifted drastically after reading the first chapter.

my mother lent me this book the other day. i havent had a chance to open it yet, but it will be interesting to see what kind of affect it will have on me. one thing i do feel is that we are all one, and it's something i just see and feel in everything. people, art, music, nature. i see myself reflected in it all and it all of it in me when i see my reflection. but who knows, maybe im CRAZY :) although they do have a shitty way of describing what the book is about, i seem to understand everything they mentioned. but if they want to turn this concept on to average folk, they better think of a better way of doing so, it does seem a little fanatical at times. but its oprah's character lol. if you haven't seen how tom cruise attacked oprah, check it out..

Though it is possible that

Though it is possible that the lives of these individuals you mention have changed as a result of reading a book, I'd ask to what extent and to what end? I've rarely perceived people's behavior to change much. I've only ever altered someone's perception significantly on a very few occasions, and only then because their minds were almost synchronous with what I was telling them. And even then, only a few of them modified certain behavioral patterns at best. Change is an ambiguous word though - as Obama slurs well.

As for you, you won't learn much from it. My guess is that you require other teachings right now, probably not those you can acquire through a book or online course.

I will post pieces of my book on the LC soon for all to read & edify I'm sure. I tried to destroy all traces of it because of how intellectually impotent I felt at conveying my experiences through words. A positive moment in my life; the moment the voice in my died. That's when I turned to music, and other creative forms of expression & action.

after a second look

this video has made me appreciate oprah and tolle in a whole new way. but i still think this type of 'consciousness' building leads people toward escapism.

I want to probe your mind

[EDIT] Jeff, I want to probe your mind some more. Let's go to the Alex - from all the beer of yours I've drunk I think I owe you a couple.

escapism

i agree jeff.  ive noticed even alot of my friends have become "escapists" in ways after finding inner light and all that jazz.  its especially easy when some are spiritual, but stay in the confines their home spaces and are exposed little to the outside, physical world that seems to be falling apart.  what is the point of having this push for higher conciousness when most cant even feed or shelter themselves.  whether its the chakras or maslow's needs, safety/security are at the bottom, and thats where "they" want to keep us.  "no need for self actualization or spiritual enlightenment here folks, go back to your tv, clothes, cars, job, well feed your soul for you, we know whats best for you..."  :)   unless people are allowed or are albe to feel allowed to sit still for a second or two and access that "nowness", we will never reach any kind of critical mass, whether spiritual or secular.

They are trying to sell a

They are trying to sell a book, but they do also seem intent on raising people's awareness of the interdependency of all life on this planet. I'll give them credit for that. You see JeffWink, in the 70's, new age philosophy took over in a bad way, and self-help books were really just that:

help your self books.

They were secretly your spiritual guide, helping each new capitalist to:

mind their own business.

They sought to convince consumers of their ego's rightful place as the center of the universe. Almost a hippy bastardization of Aynn Rand's egoist philosophy.

At least Tolle's teachings are actually in tune with universal truths, and not the fallacy of egoism. And I will argue that given the chance.

I think, therefore you are.

first Opera post on the LC goes to Pete.

I wrote a book about consciousness as ego - and how technology tends to amplify or augment the ego. But as I've found out, consciousness is a suitcase word.

I appreciate Tolle's description of consciousness as the total opposite of mine. To many in the cog sci community, consciousness is the illusory impression of, what I think, Tolle describes as the voice: the immediate impression of our focused attention, usually upon, what we typically describe as, thoughts.

In cog sci, consciousness is seen as the mouthpiece of a ventriloquist. They argue that all the processes that account for how we think, feel, perceive and sense the world occur unconsiously. What we experience consciously is the byproduct of a processs that of which we cannot experience consciously.

Interestingly, this unconsciousness, this undercurrent, is almost what Tolle describes as consciousness. That is, he describes, like many others, enlightenment as the expanding awareness of this unknown waterfall from which your normal experience flows from.

Summarizing one of Tolle's surmons I just watched: you acknowledge the "simplicity of this moment" once you embrace now, what is, where your thoughts emerge from, the space, that is. Of course, Tolle is referring also to the collective consciousness. I would simply describe this as the collective unconscious, according to my teaching, but it doesn't really matter. We're both talking about and experiencing the same thing. That's the beauty. We are one, the ego fractures.

Oil, of the snake variety

Thanks for posting this Pete.  Mass trance indeed (well put). HA.

At no point does Oprah explain what they are supposedly talking about. Really... the viewers get nothing more than name dropping in an exhilarated tom cruiseish format (lots of 'wow this is the greatest thing on the planet' but no actual explanation of what they are talking about - our grandparents had a name for this... "Crazy") of whatever Tolle is talking about. Its almost as if this whole video is a long sales pitch with absolutely no substance...

I kept waiting for oprah and tolle to bust out some acronyms and diction that would be foreign to most people. ya know, to add to the confusion and heighten the mystery (mainstream manipulation).

ok, so what I got out of this 9 minute video was that I absolutely HAVE to buy this book. That is, if I want to know what the hell they are talking about.
