Art on Camera: Screening Culture
Appearing in a rash of recent films, art has been getting the Hollywood treatment. Case in point: The Cell features installation works heavily “inspired” by Damien Hirst and other artists. Whether the artwork is directly referenced in the film, a crucial part of the narrative, or merely a source of inspiration for set designers or for the purposes of environmental ambience, the representation of art in film plays a key role in bringing art to a wider public, but does it actually address the role of art in the public sphere or merely reinforce stereotypes?
