LCDEV work session

Mar 27 2008 - 9:30pm
Location:
undisclosed til decision can be established

copied from thomas' blog post on the subject.

Agenda for next meeting (please add):
FEATURES:

  • what features people are already using, will use if organized
effectively, or we might think of dropping (can't think of any myself)?
  • who will be using particular features the most?
  • how can we organize the site to suite users' needs?

DESIGN:

  • what design elements are we looking for most? Elements include: flexibility, personalization, and cohesiveness.
  • what factors dictate the layout of a site like this? (I think
reviewing other sites can only help broaden our scope of understanding
    of this issue.)

CONTEXT:

  • Catering to different groups in London. We should explore how to
make group pages more interesting with which blocks, block regions, and
styling we choose to shape the layout. Group pages need serious
consideration. A good question is: how can we make a group page more
like a profile page even? So that they feel unique/particular to that
    group.
  • Also, how can we broaden LC's usership/readership

You don't like talking? How

You don't like talking? How about remaining lappy-less for an hour or so? Then, we can move to where you guys want.

Why don't you just read the post. Talk first, then, if anybody still has energy we can work somewhere else later.

Besides, countrystyle dampens my style Tongue out.

a lot easier to talk

A lot easier to talk about the website when we can all look at it.  If we go somewhere without wifi, we'll regret it.

Also, please start replying to the appropriate comment so that the discussions can be threaded properly.  It's hard to know who you're replying to sometimes when you just hit any reply link.  You've gotta use the reply link on the comment you're replying to.

ok. but my plasmids are in

ok. but my plasmids are in my console. So I can't be enflaming or electrocuting anybody you piss off downtown - remember that.

Well I want to go somewhere

Well I want to go somewhere public - our dev needs a breath of fresh air, know what I'm sayin'.

Lets try cafe one for the meeting, and if anyone still has energy for dev work than I can drive us wherever we want to go after that.

Country Style

There's no sense in having a meeting somewhere that doesn't have wireless.

Country Style at Adelaide and Horton has wifi, we should meet there.

location guys? How about we

location guys? How about we go for coffee to have our formal meeting at cafe one to discuss and then, impromptu, decide where to go after that for development work.

I'd say nine:30 since I work till nine.

Trev McNaughton's picture

nine thirty

I posted it as 930 with that in mind.. what would be a good place thats open and possibly has open wifi?

also, a lot of brunt work won't be done by me for atleast 2 weeks.. my laptop seemed to have fried, and its undergoing warranty.. so I only have the eeepc to work on.. which isn't ideal.

I think we're pretty limited

I think we're pretty limited to Alex if we want wifi+power past 9.

Trev McNaughton's picture

ughhhh

the alex is so far away.. and potentially crowded since matti is spinning.. not exactly the best place for a meeting...

agenda

I agree with jer here, we need to finalize, not propose right now.  Our objective for the next month (forseen projected time frame), is to fine tune the existing beta, and make sure everything is in order to get '2.0' replacing 'beta' in the banner..

here's what I think we need to do:

  • theme simplification (perhaps review the css code of the new theme, to add shortforms and bring the filesize down)
  • block layout - pertaining to certain blocks, I think we also need user info on which blocks are viewed most to gauge importance
  • panel page creation for various links in the menus
  • review modules being used, and determine if upgrading to newer versions is an option, or needed (debugging)

these aren't in any particular order.. but will take up the most man hours to complete, which means the most downtime.

After this stuff is done, I agree that we should look at what thomas has been proposing as well.  We need to look at what he's suggested, as well as some other stuff we looked at earlier on in the game..

I alread said that I would

I alread said that I would not develop this theme anymore. I will fix major bugs.

  • block layout - pertaining to certain blocks, I think we also need user info on which blocks are viewed most to gauge importance
  • panel page creation for various links in the menus
  • review modules being used, and determine if upgrading to newer versions is an option, or needed (debugging)

Most of the above can be done before out of beta. But again, I don't expect we can do that anytime soon. OF course, we haven't had a formal discussion about this yet.

I have not been given any timeline to work with.

Thomas Czermak's picture

ps.

I don't think we can take this site out of beta anytime soon.

link to draft block layout

I typed up a draft block layout.  It's based on the one that we developed in my notebook in the summer, but has the two bars both on the left instead of one on each side.  It also better accounts for blocks that should always be displayed.

simplify theme, custom /node/add

No offense Thomas, but the questions you asked in your blog post are the type you ask at the beginning of a development cycle, not right at the end.

We need a theme that above all else is finished.  It might be better if we cut out the parts of the theme that will take the longest to develop, and save them for the next major upgrade.  That upgrade will be when we do nodeprofile, panels 2,  buddylist2 etc. so it probably won't be that long.

If we can get the theme up and complete in the next couple of weeks, I think we can look at removing "beta" from the banner.

Before I forget, I also wanted to mention that we should make a custom /node/add page.  One that's broken down into sections and uses icons to help people choose the appropriate content type for their post.

You have made little

I respect you're input but you have made little attempt to organize meetings and assemble a battle plan. There is little to no organization of a development cycle here. If you wanted to assign dates to things you should have done so. None have been established.

Tell me, when do you plan to take the site out of beta? You have not discussed this at a meeting. We haven't had a formal meeting in months. Just impromtu development work sessions.

I would love to discuss a development cycle. If you and trevor have done this already you perhaps have forgotten to include me in the loop.
