So, I built a compost bin here at the Unity Project a month or two ago (out of 99% reclaimed materials i might add!) and now it stinks. A few days ago it was alot worse (I think the lesson was not to throw whole moldy onions and rotting potatos in...). Any hoo, I just added sawdust to the mix and modifyed the lid to keep more moitsure out yesterday and that seems to have made a diffrence (or maybe the diffrence was from the cooler temperatures, who knows...), but I'm wondering what else I can do to keep the smell down and maybe speed up the de-comp of the pile (because with meals for 40, it fills up fast!) . So far I've read about the sawdust as mentioned above, mixing in charcol, peat moss, more "greens and browns" (leaves and grass clippings), turning the compost (which I've been doing from the start), etc, etc...
Does anyone have any other suggestions, or have sources for cheap (read free or nearly free) sawdust, charcol or peat moss?
Thanks,
-30-
Mike.

I would be adding worms to the compost even though im sure there are plenty in it the more the better they will help break down the food quicker and make it more nutrient rich. My wife and I have a pile as well for our garden, and since mothers day is around the corn for her present i got her all new garden tools
compost
it definately smells at night.. when I work on the kitchen thats all I can smell.. I think the smell gets trapped in all the cupboards and pots and pans, and becomes little pockets of gross!
This morning, Terry mentioned "compost accelerant" not sure what it is exactly, or if its organic, but he is a country boy.. so he may be on to someting too..
