Composite bike drawing by Jennifer RobertsonAt the Alleycat race yesterday, a few people thought it would be fun to do a midnight group ride this saturday.  I'm proposing that we meet up at midnight and choose a destination (feel free to suggest them here in the thread).

If you have bike lights you should probably bring them.  We'll probably stick to side streets to avoid the cars.  And it would be nice if this ride could be a little bit faster than critical mass usually is.

fun

About 18-20 people came out.  It was a lot of fun.  We rode through Old North and then east, eventually winding up at the picket line of striking OPSEU workers in front of a Community Living London location on Trafalgar near Kiwanis Park.

Compared to critical mass rides during rush hour, it was a lot easier keeping the group from getting too spread out.  There were no cars trying to fill the gaps between the various clusters of cyclists.

Somebody else should do the call out for the next midnight ride.  It doesn't take much.

i'll still be there if it's raining

I'll still be there if it's raining.  If it's raining a lot I might not want to ride for very long... perhaps straight to my porch.  But I'll be there.

P.S. My porch has a couch.

Night Biking

I looooove night biking!! My favourite thing to do, and I know lots of good night-routes.

I can't come on Saturday though, and I have to say that I highly recommend going on a night early in the week, like a Monday or Tuesday.  Much less traffic, emptier roads, more enjoyable.  Although I understand it limits participation by those who have to work in the am.

Jer, i'm glad you used my bike drawing for this.

Here is another one that i did, specifically about night-biking.Night Biking

Super-bad

And by "bad", i mean "good"... in that it's so good, it's bad.  the art that is.

(it's a compliment, just trust me...)

fire in backyard

The ride will also most likely be followed by a fire in my backyard with entertainment courtesy of Xena.

two bikes available

There are apparently two (2) working bikes in my backyard that people could borrow if they're lacking bikes.

They might even be able to keep them... but it would be cool if some money could be directed towards James (an american war resister who is AWOL here in Canada... he built them up).

fast?

fast is always nice but i think the speed of the ride will be dictated by the riders who show up.

the 'group' concept of the ride should be in the forefront. however, i agree that crit-mass speed would be too slow. see u out there.

formation

Chad was suggesting that we should try to learn how to ride in formation.  I think that's a good idea.

standard formations

http://pinoybikediaries.blogspot.com/search/label/Tagaytay Here are a couple pictures of standard drafting formations. generally the pack (peleton) rotates counter clockwise, with fresh riders advancing on the right and falling back on the left.. We ought to find some better pictures and adopt some common patterns.
