Dear the Commons,
How can I save some water?
Dear myself,
Well, I just saw this on CBC... when you have your shower, keep the plug in the drain. when your done, save the shower water and collect it in a container (such as a large rubbermade container). Turn off the water to the tank on your toilet. use the shower water in the tiolet tank when you need to flush...

My parents have been doing
My parents have been doing this for years. I can't remember how it all happened, surely as a result of some horrible plumbing diaster in their house, and well, my father can't fix anything, gotta love the man. So, they got the idea that they would start blocking the water in the shower and that would provide a temporary fix. My parents' basement consists of two giant sink basins, as they have a suds saver washer machine. Needless to say, that as well gets used when necessary. Sounds a little nutty, I'm sure, but it works great, really minimizes water waste and since the water company keeps overestimating on their water meter, my parents have had a credit on their water bill for years.
Greywater systems
I have a great zine called Guerilla Greywater Girls which gives terrifically detailed instructions on how to set up basic plumbing to reroute the greywater from your shower / sink into toilet or garden. (also on setting up a backyard wetland system in bathtubs to filter / clean your greywater) You're welcome to borrow it, or look for it at the Zine Library at the indie media fair in May.

Also, a guy I used to know plugs the tub when he has a shower, and when hes done leaves the hot water in there until it cools, contributing to heating the house a bit.
and dont forget a rain barrel in the spring to collect water for the garden. i put one under my upstairs neighbour's leaky air conditioner last summer and got bucketfulls of pure fresh water.

Ingenious
I love this idea.
A few more ideas forsaving water:
Have showers instead of baths.
Use grey water(used water from the shower, dishwashing, etc.) for your garden.
Use the washing machine only for full loads and wash on the economoy cycle
Wash dishes by hand, rather than in an automatic dishwasher
And the one that we all love: If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down.
don't flush
In addition to "If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" a friend of mine also (jokingly) recommends not flushing until you can't close the lid!
